Scottish Challenge Cup, Round Two

Former Morton goalie Derek Gaston now plays for Stirling Albion, where he doubles as groundskeeper. Source.

It’s Round Two of the Challenge Cup. Morton visit Forthbank Stadium to meet Stirling Albion. These two last met on April 18th, 2015, when Morton were in League One. Morton won all four Albion matches that year. Declan McManus was the last Morton player to score against Stirling.

Morton and Stirling previously met in the Challenge Cup in 2002-03 and 2005-06. Morton advanced both times.

Stirling finished the Challenge Cup league phase in 18th place with 3 wins and 3 losses, 9 goals for and 9 against. They beat Hibs B, Dundee B and Peterhead, and lost to Dundee United B, Inverness CT and Montrose.

Dean Shiels is reportedly in the running for the Morton manager job. He’s the son of Kenny Shiels whose last game as Morton manager was the notorious 10 – 2 loss to Hamilton Accies, May 3rd, 2014.

2025-26 Scottish Cup, Round Three

Screenshot

The Glasgow Herald on Morton versus Peterhead in the 1937-38 Scottish Cup.

It’s the Scottish Cup Round Three, when the Championship clubs join in. Morton visit Peterhead. These two clubs met in this year’s League Cup group stage. Morton won that match 4 – 2 with goals by Cameron Blues, Kris Moore, Ali Crawford and Zak Delaney.

To date Morton and Peterhead are even in Scottish Cup competition, Morton prevailing in 1938 and 2018, Peterhead in 2001 and 2008.

Morton’s Aaron Comrie played for Peterhead in 2017. Peterhead’s Craig McGuffie played for Morton in 2020-21, as did Niall McGinn last season.

Dougie Imrie has moved on to Raith Rovers. Imrie was just a month shy of his fourth anniversary as Morton manager, and a week shy of Jim Duffy’s tenure. Billy Davies takes over as interim manager. This really is a sideways move by Imrie. Raith are only 1 point ahead of the Ton and 2 goals behind on goal difference and have already been beaten by seven different Championship opponents including the three bottom clubs. Some words that were spoken during the transfer process have necessitated a statement from the Greenock Morton board.

[Peterhead 2 – 2 Morton. two goals for Adeloye plus a red card. Morton win on PK, with shootout goals by Shaw, Moore, MacPherson, Longridge and Ballantyne.]

Mito HollyHock

Screenshot

The Mito HollyHock coaching staff, or possibly Tokugawa Mitsukuni (1628 – 1701) and his faithful retainers Sukesan and Kakusan.

Readers of the old blog Plenty of Nothing will know I’ve been following Mito HollyHock for a long long time, possessed by their ability to finish mid-table in J2 year after year. But this weekend HollyHock could finally earn promotion to the top Japanese division, where they have never been before. The matches that will affect this are:

V-Varen Nagasaki (66 points) [2 – 1] Mito HollyHock (67)
Oita Trinita (38) [0 – 1] JEF United (63)
Omiya Ardija (63) [1 – 2] Tokushima Vortis (61)
Blaublitz Akita (42) [0 – 0] Vegalta Sendai (61)

If Mito don’t lock it down this weekend there’s still the final league fixture next weekend, and after that a playoff for the third promotion spot. [It’s still in doubt.]

Also, it’s the 105th Emperor’s Cup final. Vissel Kobe play Machida Zelvia. Vissel have been to the final twice before and won both times. It’s the first time to the final for Zelvia. This is the second year in a row that the final lands in mid-November.

Machida Zelvia [3 – 1] Vissel Kobe

Meanwhile, Morton visit Dunfermline. The Pars are fifth with 19 points, Morton sixth with 18. Morton have won two in a row and are undefeated in three. This season’s first meeting between the Ton and the Pars ended in a scoreless draw.

Q: Which current Morton players predate manager Imrie? A: Cameron Blues and Michael Garrity who were both signed by David Hopkin.

Scottish Challenge Cup, league phase, matchday 6, rearranged fixtures:
Montrose 4 – 4 Hibs B (November 17)
Dumbarton 0 – 2 Stenhousemuir (November 19)

The SPFL has been conducting experiments on the Challenge Cup for a decade or more, with very mixed results. This season’s cup began with a league phase involving the twenty League One and Two clubs plus ten Premiership B sides, each playing six matches. This league phase, spread over three months, served to eliminate eight teams, all of them Premiership B sides in the end. In the draw for Round Two the clubs are ranked by league position in last year’s Championship (with St Johnstone, Ross County and Arbroath slotted in) followed by the Challenge Cup league phase final standings. Pairs of higher clubs are matched against pairs of lower clubs, and from these pairings the actual fixtures are drawn by lot. By this method either Raith Rovers or Morton will play either Hamilton or Stirling. The final position of every team in the league phase must be known before the Round Two draw can happen, consequently the draw had to be delayed a week until those two postponed fixtures were completed.

The draw was held yesterday in such a way that home field advantage went to 8 higher teams and 8 lower teams. Morton will visit Stirling Albion.

Coldstream FC have been around since 1895. They were founding members of the East of Scotland League in 1923 and currently play in the EoSL Second Division. As full members of the SFA they have participated in every Scottish Cup since 2007. Their ground is the appropriately named Home Park. Coldstream won the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup in 1948 (see above).

Morton visit Stark’s Park. Raith Rovers are sixth in the division with 17 points, Morton eighth with 11. The season is one-third over, putting Morton on track to finish with 33 points, not safe from relegation.

Morton have lost their last two matches, and in fact have beaten only one team, last-place Airdrieonians. Raith beat second-place Partick last week.

Coming into this weekend, the Championship clubs have played twelve games each, League 1 eleven each, and the Premiership and League 2 ten each.
