2025-26 Scottish Cup, Round Four

It’s the Scottish Cup, Round Four, when the Premiership clubs join in. Morton visit Stenhousemuir. These two met in the League Cup group stage in July and Morton won 3 – 0.

Stenny’s best Scottish Cup run came in 1902-03 when they reached the semi-finals, where they were knocked out by Rangers. Morton reached the semi-finals in 1896-97, 1903-04, 1919-20, 1921-22 (when they won the cup), 1936-37, 1947-48 (when they lost the final to Rangers), 1967-68, and 1980-81.

In this century Morton reached the quarter-finals in 2015-16, 2017-18 and 2023-24.

Stenny reached the Challenge Cup quarter-finals this midweek. Morton went out in the second round.

Stenny’s manager Gary Naismith has been in the job for three years, putting him sixth in the SPFL’s managerial seniority list.

Tomi Adeloye has left the club. And alt-manager Billy Davies has too.

Morton visit Partick Thistle. Partick are second in the division with 39 points, Morton seventh with 22. Both meetings so far this season have ended as draws.

Morton played to a scoreless draw against Partick Thistle on this date in 1920, and beat them 3 – 1 on this date in 1931. Morton’s record against all comers on January 3rd is 10 wins, 12 draws and 13 losses, according to Fitbastats.

Morton have scored 18 goals in league play entering this match. Twelve players have scored, and none of them has more than 3 league goals on the season. Partick’s Logan Chalmers has 6.

Ian Murray is the new Morton manager. He has previously managed Dumbarton, St Mirren, Airdrieonians and Raith Rovers. By my count he has 6 wins against Morton, 5 draws and 8 losses.

It’s the 47th Empress’s Cup final, played at the Japan National Stadium. The women’s cup final takes over the New Year’s Day time slot that was the property of the men’s cup from 1969 till 2021. Leonessa have been to the final ten times and won seven times. This is Regina’s first appearance. Coincidentally this is the 47th match of the tournament.

Match No. 47: INAC Kobe Leonessa 1 – 2 Sanfrecce Hiroshima Regina

Japanese football is making the switch from a summer schedule to a winter one, the better to fit into the international tournaments and give Japanese players easier access to foreign jobs. This change has been in the works for a few years. When the women’s WE League started in 2021 they knew the change was coming and went straight to the winter format. J1, J2, J3 and the JFL will make the change in June.

How did the 2025 season play out? Kashima Antlers won the J1 title. They and 2nd-place Kashiwa Reysol advance to the next AFC Champions League Elite. 6th-place Machida Zelvia won the Emperor’s Cup and advance to AFC Champions League Two. Sanfrecce Hiroshima won the Super Cup and the J League Cup. Yokohama FC, Shonan Bellmare and Albirex Niigata are relegated to J2.

Mito HollyHock, V-Varen Nagasaki and JEF United Chiba are promoted to J1. Roasso Kumamoto, Renofa Yamaguchi and Ehime FC are relegated to J3.

FC Imabari Ladies are relegated from Nadeshiko 2. Renofa Yamaguchi Ladies are promoted to Nadeshiko 2.

Kilsyth

Kilsyth, 1926. Kilsyth is on the northeast fringe of Glasgow, situated between the Kilsyth Hills to the north, the River Kelvin to the south, and bogs and marshes to the east and west. It was the site of the Battle of Kilsyth between Royalists and Covenanters in 1645. It’s the home of the first curling club, founded in 1716. Building stone has been quarried here for centuries, which has left several large holes in the townscape.

Kilsyth Rangers began in 1913 and play at Duncansfield Park. Kilsyth Athletic was formed in 2002 and uses Kilsyth Sports Field as its home ground. The two are in the West of Scotland League Second Division this year and play each other today.

Morton visit St Johnstone. St Johnstone are top of the division with 38 points. Morton are seventh with 21.

The season is half over. Morton are on track to finish with 42 points, good enough for sixth place in last year’s Championship.

Hearts are after St Johnstone’s top scorer Josh McPake (who played for Morton in 2020-21). McPake leads the Championship with 12 goals. It’s not too long since Rangers were after Hearts’ top scorer.

Hamilton Academical have been docked 9 points for failing to maintain a bronze licence.

Gary Miller has taken on the role of interim head coach at Morton.

With the World Cup approaching like a distant cloud of locusts the CFL has had to plan ahead and release its 2026 schedule early. There will be no Argonaut home games between May 29th (preseason week 3) and August 6th (regular season week 10) and no BC Lions home games between May 23rd (preseason week 2) and June 27th (Week 4). As the Lions are giving themselves less than 24 hours to convert their stadium from World Cup to CFL football after New Zealand vs Belgium June 26th, you can imagine a postponement happening.

It’s Round Two of the Challenge Cup. Morton visit Forthbank Stadium to meet Stirling Albion. These two last met on April 18th, 2015, when Morton were in League One. Morton won all four Albion matches that year. Declan McManus was the last Morton player to score against Stirling.

Morton and Stirling previously met in the Challenge Cup in 2002-03 and 2005-06. Morton advanced both times.

Stirling finished the Challenge Cup league phase in 18th place with 3 wins and 3 losses, 9 goals for and 9 against. They beat Hibs B, Dundee B and Peterhead, and lost to Dundee United B, Inverness CT and Montrose.

Dean Shiels is reportedly in the running for the Morton manager job. He’s the son of Kenny Shiels whose last game as Morton manager was the notorious 10 – 2 loss to Hamilton Accies, May 3rd, 2014.

2025-26 Scottish Cup, Round Three

The Glasgow Herald on Morton versus Peterhead in the 1937-38 Scottish Cup.

It’s the Scottish Cup Round Three, when the Championship clubs join in. Morton visit Peterhead. These two clubs met in this year’s League Cup group stage. Morton won that match 4 – 2 with goals by Cameron Blues, Kris Moore, Ali Crawford and Zak Delaney.

To date Morton and Peterhead are even in Scottish Cup competition, Morton prevailing in 1938 and 2018, Peterhead in 2001 and 2008.

Morton’s Aaron Comrie played for Peterhead in 2017. Peterhead’s Craig McGuffie played for Morton in 2020-21, as did Niall McGinn last season.

Dougie Imrie has moved on to Raith Rovers. Imrie was just a month shy of his fourth anniversary as Morton manager, and a week shy of Jim Duffy’s tenure. Billy Davies takes over as interim manager. This really is a sideways move by Imrie. Raith are only 1 point ahead of the Ton and 2 goals behind on goal difference and have already been beaten by seven different Championship opponents including the three bottom clubs. Some words that were spoken during the transfer process have necessitated a statement from the Greenock Morton board.

[Peterhead 2 – 2 Morton. two goals for Adeloye plus a red card. Morton win on PK, with shootout goals by Shaw, Moore, MacPherson, Longridge and Ballantyne.]
