Wanderers versus Pacific

HFX Wanderers host Pacific FC for the first Halifax home game of 2026.

These two teams met in the first CanPL match for both on April 28th, 2019, and Pacific won 1 – 0. Over all Pacific have been somewhat the better club with 11 wins to Halifax’s 7, and 9 draws, but last season Halifax finished fourth while Pacific finished seventh. In a league in which the Edmonton and Winnipeg clubs have failed, Halifax and Victoria are refreshingly successful professional clubs, considering that neither town has ever had an NHL or CFL team.

The Wanderers are third in the table with a win and a draw. Pacific are sixth with two losses.

Meanwhile in the Championship Morton host Queen’s Park. QP are seventh with 39 points, Morton eighth with 36. So far this season Morton have a win, a draw and a loss against the Spiders.

As things stand Morton have outperformed only two of their post-1994 36-game tier II seasons: 2000-01 when they finished with 35 points, and 2013-14 when they finished with 26. Both times they were relegated. Morton finished 1999-2000 with 36 points, ending up in eighth place.

Morton travel to Stark’s Park for a match against Raith Rovers. Raith are fifth with 36 points and a 0 goal difference, Morton eighth, also with 36 points but -11 on goal difference. So far this season Raith have one win against Morton and two draws.

To equal last season’s point total and break even Morton must win every remaining game.

Raith Rovers won the Challenge Cup last weekend.

After last night’s result Ross County must win their last three matches and Morton lose their last four in order for the Staggies to finish higher than the Ton.

2025-26 Scottish Challenge Cup Final

Inverness CT and Raith Rovers in action, July 26th, 2025. Photo by Louise Gordon.

It’s the final of the Scottish Challenge Cup, a fixture steeped in tradition, fraught with meaning, the antithesis of diddiness.

ICT won the cup in 2003-04 and 2017-18, Raith in 2013-14 and 2021-22. They were to have met in the 2019-20 final but it was cancelled due to Covid and the two sides were declared co-winners, so it’s correct to say that each has won the cup two-and-a-half times.

Raith are fifth in the Championship, Inverness first in League One. They met in the League Cup group stage back in July and Raith won 5 – 1. Only four third-tier teams have ever won this cup: Stenhousemuir, Stranraer, Alloa and Queen of the South.

Clubs that have never played in the Challenge Cup final are: Celtic, Aberdeen, Motherwell, Hearts, Hibs, Kilmarnock, Arbroath, Montrose, East Fife, Cove Rangers, Kelty Hearts, East Kilbride, The Spartans, Forfar, Annan, Elgin, Stirling Albion and Edinburgh City.

Top ticket price is £20. Top ticket price for the coming FIFA World Cup final is $10,990. Story.

2025-26 Scottish Challenge Cup final (tomorrow):
Raith Rovers [4 – 1] Inverness Caledonian Thistle

Meanwhile in the Championship, Morton visit Dunfermline. The Pars are fourth in the Championship with 40 points, and Morton are sixth with 36. So far this season they’re even, with a win, a loss and a draw each. A win today would put Morton 1 point out of the promotion playoffs.

The last Morton player to score against Dunfermline was Cammy MacPherson on February 17th. The last Dunfermline player to score against Morton was Charlie Gilmour on November 22nd.

The 2026 Canadian Premier League begins:
Vancouver FC [0 – 1] HFX Wanderers [Goal by Callegari.]

This is the eighth season for the Canadian Premier League. The league now has a team in Montreal, but no longer has a team in Winnipeg. Only five of the league’s original seven clubs remain and one of those has rebranded itself twice.

There’s a gap in the CanPL schedule in June where the World Cup group stage will go, though none of the CanPL clubs play at a World Cup venue. The Toronto Argonauts and BC Lions are the ones who have had to move out of their stadiums for FIFA.

The league has abandoned its eccentric five-team playoff format and returned to the rational universe of two semi-finals and a final.

Arbroath travel to Cappielow. Arbroath are third in the division with 47 points, Morton eighth with 33. Despite their respective positions Morton have handled Arbroath pretty well so far with a win and two draws.

Seventeen Morton players have scored this season, league and cup. Forty-four players have scored on Morton, league and cup. St Johnstone’s Jamie Gullan leads all others with four anti-Ton goals.

There are six matches left in the schedule, including today’s. Are Morton safe from relegation? No. But in order for Morton to finish ninth Ross County must earn two more wins than them in the final six fixtures, and for Morton to finish tenth Ross County and Airdrie must both win two more games than them. Ross County and Airdrie each have only one win from their previous six league matches.

Rangers [0 – 0] Celtic [Celtic win on PK] (tomorrow)
St Mirren [2 – 1] Partick Thistle (tomorrow)

Celtic have won the Scottish Cup 42 times, Rangers 34, Aberdeen 8, St Mirren 3, Dundee United 2, Falkirk 2, Dunfermline 2, and Partick Thistle once.

Meanwhile in the Championship it’s Morton vs St Johnstone. St Johnstone are first in the division with 54 points. Morton are seventh with 30. This is Morton’s last chance to get a win off the Saints, unless, improbably, they meet in the playoffs.

Morton are three quarters of the way through this season, on track to finish with 40 points. In 2023-24 Inverness CT were relegated with 42. Following Tuesday’s games St Johnstone are safe from relegation.

St Johnstone have four former Morton players on their roster: Reghan Tumilty (Morton 2018-20), Jack Baird (2019-20 and 2022-25), Josh McPake (2020-21) and Morgan Boyes (2024-25).

Morton’s most recent goal against St Johnstone was scored by Eamonn Brophy August 30th.

As usual in the last quarter of the season, everyone is injured.

[Morton 0 – 2 St Johnstone.]

World Cup watch: Could Toronto and Vancouver absorb matches relocated from Guadalajara where there’s currently a drug war going on? The matches are:
June 11, South Korea vs UEFA Path D. Toronto’s BMO Field is in use June 12 for Canada vs UEFA Path A. Vancouver’s BC Place is in use June 13 for Australia vs UEFA Path C.
June 18, Mexico vs South Korea. BC Place is in use that day for Canada vs Qatar and on June 21 for New Zealand versus Egypt. BMO Field is in use on June 17 for Ghana vs Panama and on June 20 for Germany vs Ivory Coast. (Plus it’s hard to picture Mexico allowing its national team’s match to be relocated to another country.)
June 23, Colombia vs IC Path 1. BMO Field is in use that day for Panama vs Croatia. BC Place is in use June 24 for Switzerland vs Canada.
June 26, Uruguay vs Spain. BMO Field is in use that day for New Zealand vs Egypt, while BC Place is in use the same day for Senegal vs IC Path 2. And there’s a CFL game scheduled for BC Place June 27.
Conclusion: It would take a shoehorn.

Ricki Lamie is back at Queen’s Park. He first played for them in 2013-14. And he played for Morton from 2014 to 2018. Source.

Neil Lennon versus Greenock Morton

Neil Lennon and Jim Duffy were ready for a square go in 2017, but shook hands in the end. That’s Lawrence Shankland over Duffy’s shoulder. Source.

Lennon’s Dunfermline Athletic return to Cappielow for a Tuesday nighter to make up for the match postponed January 10th. Dunfermline are fifth in the Championship with 29 points, Morton seventh with 27. The Pars have two games in hand.

Morton’s season is two-thirds over. They’re on track to finish with 40 or 41 points, not completely safe from relegation. At the moment they’re 5 points out of fourth place and 4 points out of ninth.

By my count this is Lennon’s ninth game against Morton. He has won twice:
2013/9/24 Celtic 0 – 1 Morton
2016/8/27 Hibs 4 – 0 Morton
2016/12/17 Morton 1 – 1 Hibs
2017/3/29 Hibs 0 – 0 Morton
2017/4/8 Morton 1 – 1 Hibs
2025/5/2 Morton 2 – 0 Dunfermline
2025/8/2 Morton 0 – 0 Dunfermline
2025/11/22 Dunfermline 1 – 0 Morton
