Like the Western Hockey League, the Quebec Hockey League of 1953-54 had seven teams, six in Canada and one in the States. They were the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, Montreal Royals, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Aces, Sherbrooke Saints, Valleyfield Braves and Springfield Indians.

The Aces began in 1928 in the Quebec City Railway-Paper League, joined the the Quebec Amateur Hockey Association in 1936, the Quebec Hockey League in 1953 and the American Hockey League in 1959. The AHL club moved to Richmond, Virginia in 1971 and shut down in 1976.

Le Colisée was opened in 1949 and closed in 2015 when the Videotron Centre was built, but is still standing. Seating in 1953 was 10,000.

The Aces’ greatest player was Jean Beliveau, who played for them from 1950 to 1952.

I can’t prove it but I think the Finnish club Porin Ässät is probably named after the Quebec Aces.

The Ottawa Senators visited Le Colisée on October 25th, 1953.

First period: no scoring.

Second period: goals by Geisebrecht (Ottawa) and Brown (Quebec).

Third period: goals by Regan (Quebec) and Brown.

Final score: Quebec 3, Ottawa 1.

Quebec’s Adam Brown was a veteran of 391 NHL games with Detroit, Chicago and Boston, plus 200 games in the AHL. He was killed in a car crash in 1960, aged 40.

Larry Regan was a former Senator and later played 280 games in the NHL with Boston and Toronto.

Jack Geisebrecht started out as a Senator, made a tour of US minor league cities, returned to Ottawa, and finished up as a Pembroke Lumber King.
